Foundation Mutual Funds

With a goal of providing the highest possible return within a stated risk tolerance, understanding risk is crucial. Investment returns are dependent on a number of variables. Still, it generally holds true that with the greatest reward comes the greatest risk. Conversely, reduced reward is largely associated with reduced risk.

Most investors are probably unaware of the real risks associated with the average Canadian mutual fund which is weighted to mimic the Canadian market. Resource and financial stocks dominate the Canadian market. With this type of concentration, diversification is difficult to achieve for most Canadian funds.

We believe diversification is the cornerstone of risk management. An over-reliance on these two sectors, in our opinion, puts the average mutual fund investors at too much risk.

Our diversification approach provides strong risk management without reducing the potential for rewards.

Still, we want to ensure our portfolios will provide the returns we expect, reducing the potential for unwanted surprises. We stress test each portfolio, putting each through a series of ‘what ifs’ meant to test its mettle.  While these stress tests are not a guarantee of future returns, they provide a dependable profile of the variability and potential volatility that an investor can expect.

With that in mind, Foundation Funds offers five different funds that span the spectrum of reward versus risk.
